Discover the trails of modern and ancient Crete!
The tours we chose are suitable to most of you. Either you are used to hike or not. You should be aware, though that the terrain of our routes is often rocky. It is the nature of the Cretan terrain. In our tours we will go through places were our history was written.
Our goal is to bring together locals and visitors so to feel the Cretan hospitality, known from old times. Many wild animals will be on our way. Large raptors such as vultures, eagles and wild goats
Each hike ends with a meal in a local tavern. There, you will have the chance to rest for a while and taste some delicious Cretan “meze” before our way back.

Our route begins at the entrance to the gorge. We are about to hike the steep sides of the gorge with its characteristic pink rock.
During our hike you will be able to observe the rocks, wild animals and many different plant species. Further into our climb we come to a spot where we will take a rest and you can admire the breathtaking view.
Our walk continues along the dirt road towards the village of Ano Kera where we stop for a refreshing drink before continuing on to Kato Kera passing the Kera Kardiotissa convent.
Our driver will then take us to our last destination of the day Krasi village with its well know plane tree that has estimated age of more than two millenniums.

THE WILD BEAUTY OF CRETE
The gorge of Roza has three particular characteristics.
The first is its geological formations that visitors can admire.
The second is the impressive number of griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) that live there.
And the third is the unique panorama that we will have the chance to admire at the end of the gorge.
We will also visit the monastery of Kera Kardiotisa, whose pilgrimage takes place each year on 8 September. This monastery is known for its “miraculous” icon of Theotokos.A the present the holy icon is nailed inside the monastery and everyone can see it. The monastery is mentioned since 1333 AD in Constantinople archives. Nowadays it functions as a nunnery.
Also in the region is located the dam of Aposelmi which is the largest of Crete with a capacity of 25 million cubic meters. It engulfed the village Sfedili.

Our hike begins on the plateau in the village of Katharo. We will walk on the plateau and head towards the church of Timios Stavros which is an approximate distance of 4km. We then start the descent into the canyon of Havgas. The scenery is just magnificent, we will see shepherds and their flocks, wild goats, vultures and eagles to name but a few and if you can visit in the spring, the wide variety of flowers and their colours leaves you with an unforgettable memory.Inside the canyon we head to ‘the ball’, a place the locals call Νεραιδακολυμπος  (fairy bath). From there we turn back to exit the gorge where a vehicle will be waiting to take us to Lassinthos Farm for a lovely visit before our dinner.

THE PLATEAU OF SERENITY.
Katharo Plateau has a rather special story. It is located 16km from Kritsa and 12km from the Lassithi Plateau and has an approximate size of 15 km squared but only 5 of these are cultivated! As indicated through its name ‘Katharo’, meaning clean, pure, natural, the plateau operates in this fashion with very little outside influences including no electricity and no running water, the residents must collect their water from the source and only people who have fixed addresses in Kritsa village are entitled to lease land on the plateau. From 1961-1981, according to the registry entries, the population of Katharo Plateau during that time was 0! The first inhabitants were registered in 1991 bringing the population to 4!During the Venetian period (1210-1669) the plateau was well maintained and different agricultural products were cultivated (apples, pears, almonds, wheat, barley, carob, honey) and many water mills were constructed for irrigation purposes. With the Ottoman period, the plateau was the property of one family only, the Haniali  (Χανιαλη) family. Also fascinating are the fossils that have been found of elephants, deer and hippopotamus’s dated at over 400,000 years ago and not to forget the amazing array of wild and rare flowers blossoming all over the landscape.

The hike begins at the historical village of Kastamonitsa (510m). Walking along a dirt track passing on our way an ancient aqueduct built by the Romans, we arrive at the Minoan path with its zigzag form leading us to the Lassithi Plateau.

At the end of the path is the Tsoulis grave, here we can stop for a rest before making our way downhill, passing through Sheppard’s paddocks to the Lassithi Plateau.

We then meet up with our driver who will take us to Dikteon Andron (Cave of Zeus) and those who wish to can visit the cave.At the end of the route we will stop to dine at a local tavern where you can try some traditional Greek dishes.

FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF MINOANS.
We begin our journey through the historical village of Kastamonitsa. This small village is located 1km NE of the former capital of the island at the time of the Roman occupation Lyttos. Kastamonitsa was referred for the first time in the year 961 AD.

At the beginning of our hike we find the remains of an ancient Romans aqueduct built during the period of Emperor Hadrian (125-140 BC) its total length is estimated at more than 22 km. Another feature of this village is its history during the World War II. It was the place where the abduction of General Heinrich Kreipe was organized on 26 April 1944 by British commandos and Cretan partisans.

After walking along the Minoans Road we arrive at the grave of Tsoulis an infamous person in the early 19th centuries. Finally we visit ” Dikteon Andron “, the cave where Zeus was born. It is a mythical place, where people used to worship and venerate for more than 30 centuries. Its decline came after the eruption of the Santorini volcano in 1600 BC which destroyed largely the Minoan civilization.
