The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is housed in a 17th century Venetian mansion.
The History and Folklore Museum Rethymno was founded in 1974 for the purpose of research and gathering historical and folk material of Crete and especially of Rethymno prefecture.
The collections of the Museum are derived from donations and purchases and include more than 5,000 objects.
The Museum still has room for educational programs, lectures, cultural events, equipped with modern audiovisual media.
The permanent exhibition of the museum contains woven, costumes, embroidery, lace – thread compositions, ceramics, baskets, traditional agricultural tools, machining, tools traditional professions – knife maker, grommet, reseller, shoemaker.
At the end of an unforgettable trip, through the southern end of the White Mountains, lays the beach of Sougia, 67km south of the capital. A mix of sand and pebble, clean and deep waters, and an “unofficial” meeting point for nudists.
The Venetian Walls of Heraklion is the largest you meet strongest fortress building across the Mediterranean, which did not have the luck to be in the Heritage List of UNESCO. To built this massive fort took dozens of years.
It is one of the last natural paradises of Crete. The visitors usually reach it via Kastelli in Kissamos, as part of a boat tour, passing first through the island of Gramvoussa.
