The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is housed in a 17th century Venetian mansion.
The History and Folklore Museum Rethymno was founded in 1974 for the purpose of research and gathering historical and folk material of Crete and especially of Rethymno prefecture.
The collections of the Museum are derived from donations and purchases and include more than 5,000 objects.
The Museum still has room for educational programs, lectures, cultural events, equipped with modern audiovisual media.
The permanent exhibition of the museum contains woven, costumes, embroidery, lace – thread compositions, ceramics, baskets, traditional agricultural tools, machining, tools traditional professions – knife maker, grommet, reseller, shoemaker.
740 metres up on the north face of Mount Psiloritis in prefecture of Rethymno lies proudly Anogia. A village with a history that is powerful and tragic at the same time. Burned by the Turks in 1822 and by the Germans in 1944,this village has a heroic story to tell.
The Museum Nikos Kazantzakis in Myrtia Heraklion opened on June 27, 1983 by the culture minister Melina Mercouri.
The exhibits of the museum are very important, and consist of sculptures from Livadeia and Cheronea, ceramics from prehistoric and historic locations around Cheronea, Elateia,coins and weapons from the Tomb of Macedonians and the mass graves of Thebians in Cheronea.
