General information M/S IRINI

It has been seventy years since the ship building of M/S IRINI started as ‘’ SILVER CLOUD’’. It was an autumn day In Liverpool of England. A real vessel miniaturized which kept its authentic style and has survived up to these days.

The vessel first sailed as a yacht owned by a wealthy English for over 20 years. In 1955 ,the ownership was transferred into Greek hands, and with some modifications and improvements she cruised the Mediterranean Sea by the name ‘’Monica’’ .

In 1989 the present owner renamed her as ‘’IRINI’’ and was operated as a cruise ship at chania bay. After three years (while a marine hull and machinery renewal took place) with love and respect the ship starts cruising the picturesque Cretan sea once more proudly, offering you top safety and service in a unique summer escape.

The Lazaretta island is located near the city of Chania, exactly in the front of the beach Nea Chora about 1200m away. The length of the island is 200m and the width 70m.

The island was built in the 17th century thanks to the care of the ‘Health Forecasts’. This is why the island was chosen by the Venetians to build the ‘quarantine place’, their ‘Lazareto’.

In the 1950s, it was the starting point for swimmers who were participating in long-distance swimming to finish at the old harbor of Chania, in front of the Port Authority.

The Thodorou Island is located opposite the beach of Agia Marina in Chania. The ecological significance of the island is concerned with the rescue of the protected Cretan wild goat Kri Kri and the European Programme Nature 2000. The island, in spite of its size, has a rich history and interesting legends which come from the ancient times.

Its current name is due to the three-aisled church of Agioi Theodoroi but unfortunately only its remains are preserved up to now. The temple was christian and was dedicated to St. Theodore the Sdratilate. At the same place a new temple but smaller a little bit, was built.

In 1574, the Venetians built a large fortress to protect the entire area of Platanias from a possible hostile invasion. In the same year, the Venetians were able to build a fortress at the top of the Thodorou Island (Turluru) and a second one Saint Theodore or S. Francesco further down than the Church. Near to the island tourists can see the wreck of German aircraft from the II World War
